Halifax City Hall  Halifax, NS

Owner:
Halifax Regional Municipality
Cost:
$5.9M
Completion:
2013

Halifax City Hall is a National Historic Site located in the heart of downtown Halifax. The 1890 building is constructed of two types of sandstone over a granite basement and foundation. The stone work suffered from deferred maintenance and a damaging coating which was applied to the sandstone in the 1990s. G.F. Duffus and Co. Ltd. (now part of DSRA) was engaged by the Halifax Regional Municipality in 2009 to undertake the documentation of the existing condition of the exterior envelope, and then to create the specifications and tender documents and oversee the restoration of the masonry exterior. As work progressed, it became evident that the roof required replacement and the copper rainwater leader and gutters also were in need of repairs, and they were added into the scope of work. Deliverables also included as-built drawings completed after each phase of construction and a comprehensive maintenance plan for the future of the building. Construction was completed in early fall 2013, six months ahead of schedule and well under budget.
